Section 1: Why Learning Goals

Research has demonstrated that learners who have set clear, written goals for their futures, and made plans to reach those goals, achieve more in their careers than those who do not set goals.

Research has also demonstrated that training participants learn best, and are most likely to practice and apply what they learn, when their own supervisors have spoken with them in advance of the learning opportunity,  discussing the purpose of the training and their learning goals.

This CODA Learning Tool is designed to guide learners and their supervisors, mentors, or coaches, as they prepare to discuss the specific learning opportunities and the creation of individual learning goals.

Once the parties have responded to the designated questions they should meet to share their responses.  The learner should drive the writing of their learning goals, documenting them in Section 20.  Input from their supervisors, mentors, or coaches can ensure connections, or eliminate disconnects between the learners' personal goals and organization's needs and requirements.

Learners and their supervisors, mentors, or coaches are encouraged to "check-in" over the course of the learning experience.
